Learning Outcome Three: Be able to create sound assets for an interactive media product following industry practice.

Planning:

Script for Audio Description

SMPTE Time Code
Dialogue/SFX

00.00 – 00.15

Camera pans down and across beautiful English rivers and landscapes

00.16 – 00.20

The morning sun wakes up the citizens of London city, sailors take off and shop keepers get ready to open for business

00.21- 01.17

Over the Thames River athletes stand in position ready to perform their activities, gymnasts hold onto their rings, swimmers walk to the end of the diving boards, boxers stretch, motorcyclists adjust their helmets and track runners assume position.

01-17- 01.37

Tension builds as athletes wait for their queue, a gunshot is fired, the track runners take off with speed in slow motion, swimmers dive into water, meanwhile a train full of spectators drive by female track runners, as across the other side of London, boxers battle and train one-to-one

01.38- 2.34
The action is continued in a faster pace montage of athletes training and participating in their activities, including more gymnasts, rowers, weightlifters, cyclists and long jumpers  under the sunrise of Britain

When I started with this project, the first practical step I took was to record and download all the sound I needed to do, I ended up with a lot of sounds and recordings, this was very good as it was better for me to have many different sounds and recordings to use and choose from, the only disadvantage was that took very long to organize these recordings so I decided to  make a file which contained different files for separate types of sounds being used in my project.

My time management fro this project was very precise and well thought-out, I achieved this by creating my own little planner and deadlines for each part and task for the project. I made sure my own deadlines were just a little more ahead of the official deadlines we had, which allowed me to have more time to perfect my project.

Recording sound:

Recording Diary

For this project I wanted the quality of sound to be at a professional standard (High Quality), so in order to achieve this I recorded in a studio. Any of the sound effects I used where downloaded from a copyright free website so I didn't need to record anything outdoors.

My audio file sizes were very minimal in size, most of them being under 10MB excluding the soundtrack for the advert, which was 378MB in size.

Industry practice (reflecting on finished product)

When I was first given my brief to re-create the sound for an existing advert, I knew immediately which advert I wanted to use for this project and how I wanted it to sound, I then though that I should brainstorm a few more ideas to see what else I can do and how I can create the vision I have in my head. Using Cubase I created the track from scratch, using a MIDI keyboard, I first try to figure out a simple rhythm (with a basic piano) I can play continuously and then built up the track by adding other VST instruments (such as drums and violins) on top, I decided not to add any audio effects to the soundtrack as I wanted the music to sound a natural and as live-band like as possible. After finishing my first draft I listened to it back and analysed what worked and what I needed to change, I then this uploaded the improved version onto the toggle.

When creating the voice over for the advert I struggled to sync the script in with the visuals of the sequence accurately, it took me a few tries and altercations of the script, but I eventually got the timing of the video and the audio description to match as accurately as possible.

The steps to connecting Cubase to reason to create the soundtrack
  1. Make sure reason is set up
  2. Open Cubase and reason separately
  3. Devices- reason rewire
  4. create- Dr Rex loop player
  5. choose track
  6. right click in empty space
  7. copy Rex loop track

Overall I fairly pleased with the outcome of my project. The music I created was at professional standard and matches the purpose of the advert. I encounter very few issues with the production process
